Dry Land

When I am talking to my first-year writing students about revision, one thing I frequently suggest is reading written work out loud to see how it might be improved. In my own writing, too, I like to run dialogue through a few rounds of being read out loud, possibly with dramatic faces and hand motions, until it sounds right with the breaths, the pauses, and the natural interplay of words among the players in the scene.

When I read my own writing out loud, its flaws appear in greater relief, and I can see more about where it falls short and needs to be reworked. The places that sound unnatural or stilted. The accidental or misapplied snark.
